The mobile phone markets are currently swimming with affordable low-to-medium end feature phones with older unsold high-enders getting big discounts just to move them out of inventories. But to further add to it, we now hear that the leading Korean mobile phone maker Samsung has recently unveiled a trio of affordable entry level phones.

Enter the Samsung Shark line. For now, it has the candybar S5350 Shark and the sliders S5550 Shark 2 and S5350 Shark 3. It’s always great to see the big fives throwing some new affordable models here and there, interminably with upscale cutting edge smartphones costing 3 0 10 times more apiece. But are they better?

Of particular interest is the third Shark in the series, the Samsung S3550 Shark 3. Being third in the series doesn’t mean it’s the best of the long. On the contrary, it occupies the least functionality between the two sliders and has more in common with the low-end S5350 Shark. Armed with just the basic features we’ve come to expect from a down-to-earth handset without much pretenses, the Shark 3 with its trendy slider styling should have no problem appealing to the young and practical minded.

Basic Functionalities

First off, don’t expect it to be a 3G phone. The Shark 3 is just your basic quad band GSM/GPRS/EDGE phone. There’s also no WiFi. But it does have a WAP-enabled HTML web browser, emailing and social networking features to access your Facebook and other SNS sites on the fly. But without 3G and WiFi, we doubt anyone would be interested to go online with this handset.

Even its basic 2-inch QVGA TFT LCD screen with 256 colors may not offer the viewing comfort for online browsing. You still get Bluetooth 2.1 and USB 2.0 support for local data transfers.

There’s a basic imaging feature served up by its basic 2-megapixel fixed focus camera with video recording. But its multimedia feature is what takes this handset to the max with a stereo-widening DNSe (Digital Natural Sound Engine) processing you can use to enhance the sound from its media players or from the stereo Fm with RDS. You also get wireless stereo earphones with its Bluetooth A2DP support.

Internal memory is a nearly useless 35 MB, bit that gets expandability support with a microSD slot for up to 8 GB microSD cards. Though we think the more common 16 GB microSDHC cards will do just fine. You get up to 7.5 hours of talks time and up to 19 days in standby from its slim 800 mAh Lithium-ion battery fully charged.

Conclusion

With all the equally capable basic feature phones in the market, it can be a real challenge looking for the stand-out handset that can bring the value you want in an unpretentious mobile phone. The Samsung S3550 Shark 3 may have what it takes to stand-out in looks despite being so-so in just about all the features except maybe in the looks department.

What complicate the choices are those older upscale feature phones and smartphones that get discounted near the levels of new entry level phones. You could actually find better value in them.
